Amazed at myspace…Cartier, man…

I find myself often amazed at the hype over MySpace and more importantly the amount of money and business interest via marketing dollars that is being pumped into it. I mean, it’s not too hard to understand the value that companies like Coke find in reaching millions of sugar starved emotional teenagers, but it’s a pretty big suprise with enlightening impact when you find out that somebody like Cartier is spending money there. I mean, if nothing else it shows you breadth of demographic contact that MySpace has achieved ranging from “I just graduated 5th grade” to “I am rich older and buy cartier”.

It also shows a really interesting trend where money that has been traditionally spent in physical or call it traditional marketing forms is now being freed up and from what I hear, many companies are just sitting with ad-spend that is for the general target of “online”. They aren’t sure how best to apply it, or gage it, or even what to say, but they know they need to have “www” before the line item.

When you think about “bling” on MySpace, you probably think about glitter text on profiles, or maybe Swarovski-studded Sidekicks, not Cartier jewelry. But that hasn’t stopped the legendary luxury brand from launching a promotional campaign on News Corp.’s social network.
